Simplify Agri Village Project

Prepared By: Rijish V R

Mankara village is a part of Palakkad district with majority of the population depending on agriculture for their living. Though Paddy is the major agriculture crop in the village coconut, various vegetables, fruits, poultry, dairy farmers also contribute to the overall agriculture production of the village.

Major challenges faced by the farmers in the village include shortage and non availability of labours, proper technical guidance and availability of inputs and seeds and most challenging is the sales and fetching proper price for the farmers produce.

To solve all the above mentioned and most importantly identifying a proper market for the farmers which will fetch proper value for the farmers and consume all those that produced by the farmers the most effective solution is to sell the farmers produce in the village itself. In the era of digital platforms for purchasing anything and everything online let us provide a platform for our farmers to sell their produce in the village itself. Unlike other platforms every member can be a producer and a consumer simultaneously. A member can sell all that he produce in the Smart Agri Village platform and he can buy any product that is listed by other members in the Smart Agri Village platform.

Scenario :  Mr. Rijish is a farmer who produces vegetables, milk and paddy in his farms in Mankurussi. Mr. Pratuish is a teacher who does not have the time or land to produce any of the above but stays just beside the residence of Mr. Rijish.

Mr. Rijish sells his vegetables in the procurement centre at Odanoor which is 12kms away, the vegetable from there is bought by a merchant in the market at Palakkad and is then supplied to a vegetable store at Manakara. Now Mr Prauish buys the same vegetable from that shop

  • The vegetable travels almost 60kms before it reaches Mr. Pratuish, more food miles and more energy consumed and carbon emitted

  • Weight loss to the vegetable dues to dehydration (will take minimum 2 days before it reach Mr. Pratuish)

  • Damages while handling

  • 3 layer of merchants in between farmer and consumer

  • Price farmer gets will be less and the price consumer pays will be higher

Mr. Rijish sells his milk in the procurement centre at Kannampariyaram which is 3kms away, the vegetable from there is taken to the processing plant in Malampuzha and is then supplied to a store at Manakara. Now Mr Prauish buys the same milk from that shop

  • The milk travels almost 50kms before it reaches Mr. Pratuish, more food miles and more energy consumed and carbon emitted

  • Quality loss to the process (will take minimum 2 days before it reach Mr. Pratuish)

  • Damages while handling

  • 3 layer of merchants in between farmer and consumer

  • Price farmer gets will be less and the price consumer pays will be higher

Mr. Rijish sells his paddy to the supplyco procurement system, the paddy from farmer is taken to a mill in Kalady, processed and supplied back to the supplyco distribution chain. The rice reaches a ration shop or supplyco store or maveli store in Manakara. Now Mr Prauish buys the same rice from one of these outlets in Mankara

  • The paddy travels almost 340kms before it reaches Mr. Pratuish, more food miles and more energy consumed and carbon emitted

  • Damages while handling

  • 3 layer of merchants in between farmer and consumer

  • Price farmer gets will be less and the price consumer pays will be higher

To effectively create a system were consumers will be able to get food products-farm products direct from farmers and farmers sell to merchants only excess amount after the consumption of consumers in the region will have the following advantages

Food Travel Less

  • Less expense for the food to reach consumers and thus less money lost

  • Fresh food at kitchen for consumers

  • Consumers know what they are eating

  • Consumers can visit farmers farms and experience

  • Less damage due to handling

  • Less loss due to dehydration, delays , processing

  • Better value for farmers

  • Better pricing for consumers

  • Consumers know what they are eating

  • Consumers can visit farmers farms and experience

  • More money for farmers means more money spent in the village

Advantages of the Smart Agri Village platform include

  • A complete software platform to manage farmers harvest

  • Consumers can order from the available harvest

  • Door delivery management and support

  • Subscription option for milk, egg etc

  • A member can be a farmer and a consumer simultaneously

  • Money spent on food products does not go outside the village and this will ensure a stronger village economy

  • A financially stronger village will help more jobs and will ensure less brain and resource drain to cities and metros

  • A financially stronger farmer will start investing in mechanisation and modernisation
